Youth Skills Academy

Foundations & Fundamentals (Ages 5-9)

Designed for players ages 5–9 or those new to structured basketball, this program focuses on building core motor skills, athletic confidence, and sound basketball habits through high-energy, positive instruction.

Core Curriculum Focus
  • Fundamental Ball Handling: Fingerpad control, stationary dribble series (crossovers, pound dribbles), and protected dribbling with both hands.

  • Shooting Mechanics: Balance, Elbow alignment, Eye on target, and Follow-through. Building proper form from close range before extending distance.

  • Footwork & Balance: Triple-threat positioning, jump stops, pivoting without traveling, and proper spacing.

  • Layup Mechanics: Dominant and non-dominant hand footwork patterns (1-2 step cadence) and target hitting on the backboard.

  • Defensive Basics: Stance, active hands, and basic lateral movement without reaching or committing fouls.

Training Environment
  • Low player-to-coach ratio to ensure individualized feedback.

  • Skill-building games and small-sided play (1v1, 2v2) that make learning engaging and application-based.

Intermediate Skills Academy

Skill Advancement and Game IQ (Ages 10-14)

Tailored for more experienced athletes preparing for competitive play. This program bridges the gap between basic mechanics and game-speed execution.

Core Curriculum Focus
  • Advanced Ball Handling & Deceleration: Changing speeds, shiftiness, dribble combinations, and handling ball pressure in tight spaces.

  • Dynamic Shooting & Footwork: Catch-and-shoot off movement, pull-up jump shots, step-backs, and accelerating the shooting motion.

  • Finishing at the Rim: Floaters, reverse layups, euro-steps, and finishing through body contact with both hands.

  • Defensive Mobility & Awareness: Dominant and non-dominant hand footwork patterns (1-2 step cadence) and target hitting on the backboard.

  • Game IQ & Small-Sided Scrimmages: Live 2v2 and 3v3 breakdown drills designed to teach reading defensive coverage, drive-and-kick options, and off-ball movement.

Training Environment
  • High-tempo, competitive reps simulating real game situations.

  • Situational breakdown to sharpen decision-making speed.

Meet our Basketball Trainers

Coach Jeff Sabin

FSA Basketball Director and Lead Trainer

Coach Jeff brings a lifetime of basketball experience and a passion for developing young athletes both on and off the court.

A former collegiate basketball player, he competed at Tarleton State University and East Texas A&M University. His experience as a college athlete helped shape his approach to training, emphasizing skill development, shooting efficiency, competitiveness, and work ethic.

Coach Jeff spent 17 years coaching youth basketball, working with players from the 2nd-grade level through high school. During that time, he helped develop 20 players who went on to play college basketball. His training philosophy centers on helping players build skills that translate directly to game situations. He believes development comes through purposeful repetition, attention to technique, and hard work. He believes that confidence is the result of
demonstrated success. His goal is not only to help athletes become better basketball players, but also to develop habits and character that serve them beyond the court.

Coch Ralph Walker

FSA Basketball League Director and Lead Trainer

Coach Ralph Walker is a basketball player development coach with more than 15 years of experience training and developing youth, high school, and collegiate-level athletes. He is the founder of The Coach Walker and BIQ Elite Basketball, and currently serves as a high school basketball coach and Director with Cyfair Elite Sports DFW.

Coach Walker specializes in skill development, basketball IQ, guard play, shooting, ball handling, finishing, decision-making, and game situations. His training is built around helping players understand not just how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it in competitive play.

Throughout his career, Coach Walker has helped develop numerous athletes who have gone on to compete at the college level, including NCAA Division I programs. His goal at Frisco Sports Academy is to provide purposeful, high-energy training that challenges players, builds confidence, and prepares them to perform at a higher level.

Train with purpose. Play with confidence. Develop your basketball IQ.
